The Day Dairy Fat Stopped Me in My Tracks

By |May 18th, 2017|Categories: Dairy Diary, Dairy Spot, Nutrition and Health|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |0 Comments

Have a low-fat stamp on your forehead? I used to. As a registered dietitian of nearly 40 years, I am seeing the message around dairy fat changing. Dairy fat isn’t the dirty word that it has been. I was sampling foods during a professional meeting the day dairy fat stopped me in my tracks.

Dietitians love to taste food samples so that we can then take that information back to those we advise. Businesses know this and so, at professional meetings, there are always many opportunities to try new food offerings. The recent Pennsylvania Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics meeting […]

Milk: It does a college student’s body good!

By |April 30th, 2017|Categories: Dairy Diary, Dairy-Diary, Home-Featured, Nutrition and Health|Tags: , , , |2 Comments

I teach a basic nutrition class at a local college. One of my students’ projects, The Dietary Analysis, is to keep track of all the food they eat for three days and then assess its nutritional quality.

The assignment looks at whether the student is meeting the basic USDA recommendations for each food group from MyPlate (fruits, vegetables, grains, protein, and dairy). The dairy data from my class was disappointing. Here’s the breakdown for 23 students:

Students with 3 (or more) dairy servings daily
1

Students with 2 dairy servings daily
7

Students with 1 dairy serving daily
13

Students with 0 dairy servings daily
2

Q: Is it healthier to drink milk from grass-fed cows? What’s the difference between this type of milk and regular milk?

By |March 31st, 2015|Categories: Ask Dietitian-Foods|Tags: , , |0 Comments

A: While all types of cow’s milk are equal when it comes to protein, calcium and vitamin D, emerging science shows that milk from cows eating grass may have a nutrition advantage. Milk from cows that graze on grass—versus eating a grain-based diet—is a better source of a healthy fat.

Research shows that milk from grass-fed cows has more conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) than conventional milk. CLA, a fatty acid found in dairy and beef, is linked to protection from colorectal and breast cancers, diabetes and heart disease. A 2010 study from the Harvard School of Public Health found that […]

Is Milk O.K. to Drink on a Drought-Proof Diet?

By |August 15th, 2014|Categories: Dairy Diary, Home-Featured||0 Comments

California is experiencing one of its worst droughts on record. And since California produces nearly half of the fruits and vegetables grown in the United States, attention has recently shifted to the water required to grow popular foods.

A recent report in the magazine Mother Jones addresses how the production of food is water intensive. This article gives interesting information about the “water footprint” of food products (i.e., the amount of water required to produce them).

We are living in a time time when development and population growth is putting more pressure on the world’s freshwater stores. As such, the goal […]

Know More About What You’re Avoiding

By |May 28th, 2014|Categories: Home-Featured||0 Comments

Nowadays, it’s trendy to adopt gluten- and lactose-free diets. But it turns out many people don’t know much about what they’ve sworn off.

Take gluten. Recently, late night comedian Jimmy Kimmel sought to expose some fad dieters for their lack of knowledge about what gluten actually is. The revelation came after Jimmy Kimmel talked about gluten and his love for pizza on his show “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” The comedian said he suspected that some people shun gluten in their diet simply because somebody told them to.

So, Kimmel sent a camera crew to a popular exercise park in Los Angeles to […]
