Dairy Farmer, Registered Dietitian, AND Ironman!

By |August 14th, 2017

Well folks it’s me here, your dairy farmer-dietitian…. and…. Ironman! After taking a few weeks to recover and absorb the feeling of being an IRONMAN, I wanted to recap my race day thoughts and reflections of this Ironman Lake Placid journey… Thank you for all the support and well-wishes – they really helped push me to the finish line!

Pre-Ironman Jitters
Considering how much can happen in the 14 hours and 4 minutes it took me to complete Ironman Lake Placid, I made it through race day with only a few minor hiccups.

Heading up to Lake Placid was a mixture of […]

Bodacious Bovines: A Different Kind of Triathlete
Happy June Dairy Month to cows, readers and athletes near and far! Cows have always brought my family together, whether it was daily chores on the farm, at a cow show or conversation around the dinner table.

Once again, I look to cows for inspiration while training for the big 140.6 mile race day. Nutrition, hydration and chill-laxing (Yes, I’m making up words. I think we’re at that level in our blogging relationship 🙂 ) are just a few training tips my bodacious bovines demonstrate daily. Here’s how these lessons translate to becoming […]

Hydration Nation

By |June 5th, 2017

Just a quick recap for new readers/followers that are not familiar with my audacious adventure, I’m a dairy farmer and dietitian training for Ironman Lake Placid in July 2017 (that’s a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run triathlon). I teamed up with the American Dairy Association North East to blog on my experience (if you haven’t read my past blog post free feel to check them out here or check out my video:

Originally when I planned on writing a blog about hydration I was going to tell you about all things hydration…. but so much […]

Planning for Ironman Success

By |May 3rd, 2017

Growing up, my incentive to cook tasty recipes and crush some laundry was driven by getting home early from farm chores.

As a grown-up farmer, triathlete, and business owner, my incentive to plan meals, make lists and think ahead is driven by better recovery and satisfied bellies (let’s be honest – a fed hubby is a happy hubby 🙂 ).

Devoting a whole blog post on planning probably earns me “super boring adult” status, but it’s a risk I’m willing to take. Here are 3 areas of planning that triathletes focus on (or should focus more on) for ironman success:

Milk: It does a college student’s body good!

By |April 30th, 2017

I teach a basic nutrition class at a local college. One of my students’ projects, The Dietary Analysis, is to keep track of all the food they eat for three days and then assess its nutritional quality.

The assignment looks at whether the student is meeting the basic USDA recommendations for each food group from MyPlate (fruits, vegetables, grains, protein, and dairy). The dairy data from my class was disappointing. Here’s the breakdown for 23 students:

Students with 3 (or more) dairy servings daily
1

Students with 2 dairy servings daily
7

Students with 1 dairy serving daily
13

Students with 0 dairy servings daily
2

Favorite Breakfast Dairy Pairings Around the World

By |April 6th, 2017

I love to travel and cannot resist my wanderlust. It’s inherited from my favorite travel companion, my mother. She and I are looking at our next trip. We’re deciding between her choices of an excursion to Hawaii or Alaska. As the matriarch, she gets first dibs.

As I was looking over the latest brochures with my Saturday latte (whole milk, of course), I got to thinking… I have experienced some unique breakfast dairy pairings across the world.

Here’s my unofficial list of my favorite use of dairy in breakfast around the world.

Lactose Intolerance Facts: Can I Still Drink Dairy?

By |March 28th, 2017

One of the most frequent questions we hear about lactose intolerance is, can I still drink dairy?

Yes! There are ways for people with lactose intolerance to enjoy their favorite dairy foods, while benefiting from the wholesome nutrients found in milk, cheese, and yogurt.

Here are some of the most commonly asked questions – and answers – we received during Lactose Intolerance Month in February.
What is lactose intolerance?
The inability to fully digest a naturally occurring sugar (lactose) found in milk and other dairy products. With this condition, the body does not make enough of an enzyme (lactase) needed to break down […]

Ironman Nutrition: It’s All About The Food

By |March 16th, 2017

Greetings faithful readers!!!

February was amusing; I had the opportunity of training in 10° and 60° weather… sometimes in the same weekend! I’m a month into training and it happens to be “National Nutrition Month”, so I figured the most appropriate topic for this month would be fueling the body. After all, everyone needs to eat!

Picture overload disclaimer:  I may have been a bit picture-happy with this blog. It’s food… I promise you will thank me.

Milk has been in the hands of movie stars for years – from commercials, to TV shows, to the BIG SCREEN!

With the 89th Academy Awards quickly approaching, we thought it would be cool to highlight milk as a supporting actor and share our favorite milk movie moments!

Food Safety: 5 Ways Dairy is Kept Safe

By |February 21st, 2017

A lot of work goes into making safe, wholesome milk. Ever wonder, what happens on a dairy farm? And how does milk get from the farm to your table?

Providing high quality milk for our tables starts with dairy farmers’ taking good care of their cows. The animals are fed nutritious food, given 24-hour access to fresh water, and get milked 2-3 times a day. It’s a round the clock job!

On a farm tour of Richmond Dairy Farms, John Richmond hosted Buffalo Bills Aaron Williams (#23) and other players.
