Tip of the Month
Start Off the Day with Breakfast
Some consider breakfast the most important meal of the day. What makes a good breakfast? Here are some guidelines:
- Include at least three of the five food groups: dairy, protein, fruits, vegetables and grains.
- Include a good protein source, such as lowfat milk, egg, peanut butter, reduced-fat cheese, Canadian bacon, hummus or yogurt, etc.
- If possible, use this meal to consume food groups that health experts say Americans don’t get enough of - like lowfat dairy, fruits and whole grains.
Choose the breakfast that best fits your morning style:
- Morning Dash — “Grab and go” works well at the bus stop or during your morning commute to work. Try peanut butter on a bagel with chocolate milk, a fruit and yogurt parfait with a crunchy cereal topping, cereal and milk, or a fruit and dairy smoothie.
- Family Time—If it’s easier for your family to sit down together in the morning than in the evening, linger over French toast with a yogurt syrup, decorate waffles with your favorite yogurt and fruit, or pour a bowl of cereal and add berries or banana.
