July is a perfect time to cool off with some ice cream. There are so many delightful ways to enjoy ice cream during the summer months. While misinformation about sugar seems to be in the news every week, don’t be alarmed. Portions and balance in your overall diet is what matters, so enjoying the treats you love in smaller portions is a great strategy!

Ice cream also carries some nutrition along with the sugar, and it’s okay to enjoy a dessert or treat once in a while. As you plan you next picnic or special family celebration, consider adding ice cream to the menu.

Pairing the fresh fruits of summer with a scoop of ice cream is a delightful taste sensation:

  • It can be as simple as a good scoop of vanilla bean ice cream topped with fresh, sweet raspberries
  • Add a scoop of vanilla to a half a seeded cantaloupe. Cut small cantaloupe in half, scoop out seeds, add one scoop of vanilla into cantaloupe half
  • Try a scoop of chocolate with sliced bananas.
  • You can even make your own fruity ice cream

For a sweeter treat:

  • Make mini ice cream sandwiches with your favorite small cookies. Or use 2 graham squares – top one with a scoop of strawberry ice cream, then top it with another square, pressing gently. Wrap in wax paper and freeze for at least an hour.
  • Make your own fancy milkshakes. Add fresh fruit, granola, or mini chocolate chips to vanilla ice cream and whir in a blender. Serve in 6 ounce cups with spoons.
