Classroom Activities
What Belongs? What Doesn't?
Objective:
Students will be able to integrate nutrition learning into math basics by classifying food items into simple, like sets.
Materials Needed:
- National Dairy Council Food Models, magazine pictures of foods, or real foods.
- Daily Food Guide Pyramid poster.
Method:
- This can be done as a class activity or in small work groups.
- Review with class the criteria for matching sets: (Foods belonging to the same group in the food guide pyramid)
- Using food pictures, have students identify sample sets to find the non-matching food item.
- For example: Yogurt, cheese, carrots, milk. Carrots is the non-matching food item.
- Once the non-matching food is identified, students can create a new set using that food in combination with other matching and a new non-matching food item.
- Use the Pyramid poster as a reference to include sets from all five-food groups.
