Classroom Activities

My Family's Grocery List

Objective:

This activity will introduce students to the food diversities of others in the classroom and the role food plays in their homes.

Materials Needed:

  • Chalkboard
  • Drawing paper
  • Daily Food Guide Pyramid Poster

Method:

  • Display Daily Food Guide Pyramid Poster and discuss the food groups.
  • As either a homework or classroom assignment, ask students to draw or write a grocery list of their family's favorite foods.
  • Students will classify each food by food group using the Pyramid poster as a guide. This can be as simple as putting the first letter of the food group name beside each food item on their lists.
  • On chalkboard, make columns for each food group and list all student responses. Students will evaluate and discuss any distribution patterns; i.e., limited favorite foods in the vegetable group.
  • Discuss ethnic foods that are family favorites. Encourage students to share the cultural history of these foods. If there are numerous ethnic foods listed as family favorites expand the activity to include a tasting party of new foods and encourage parental involvement.
