Expanding Breakfast

First Place: $5,000
Camp Curtin School, Harrisburg School District
Harrisburg, Pa.
David Lloyd, Food Service Director

By moving breakfast from the cafeteria to the classroom, David Lloyd, food service director, increased breakfast participation from 32 percent to 84 percent. In addition, serving breakfast in the classroom resulted in decreased tardiness, absenteeism and visits to the school nurse.

Second Place: $2,000
Loyalsock Township Senior High School, Loyalsock Township School District
Williamsport, Pa.
Beth Hufnagel, Food Service Director

Encouraging high school students to eat breakfast is no easy task! To overcome the challenge, Beth Hufnagel, food service director, opened the Camelot Café, a breakfast kiosk located in the high school lobby offering “grab and go” items for students and faculty members.

Third Place: $1,000
McGuffey High School, McGuffey School District
Claysville, Pa.
Cathleen Kenefick, Food Service Director

Bus schedules prevented students from eating breakfast at the high school. To increase participation, Cathleen Kenefick, food service director, started a Grab ‘n Go Breakfast Program. Kenefick worked with an existing student committee to overcome opposition from principals and teachers and to market the program to their peers.
